To Mark the 80th anniversary of the arrival of the USAAF 306th BG at Thurleigh in 1942, members of the 306th Bomb Group veterans association visited the site.
CAF UK Wing members provided a display of WW2 artefacts, uniform and equipment, We joined local Military's Vehicle enthusiasts, members of the 306th BG Museum, Historians , collectors, local members of the public and distinguished guests and VIP's to welcome the return of the 306th Bomb Group Veterans Association for the 80th year commemoration. There were many family members of 306th crewmen amongst the visiting guests. A memorial service was held and the day spent exploring the remaining sights around the airfield as well as examining the superb 306Th BG museum. Many thanks to the 306th BG museum and all the fellow military enthusiasts for making it such a great commemoration event.
During World War II, the 306th Bombardment Group, was the first operational bombardment group in the VIII Bomber Command. It was stationed at RAF Thurleigh, England from 6 September 1942 until 25 December 1945, the longest tenure at one station for any one Eighth Air Force group.
